SUMMARY:NanoBioPhysX course
DESCRIPTION:Course outline\nAs part of the course\, participants will organize one meet-the-speaker session\, be the chair of the meeting\, and write a small popular science feature about the seminar. Scientific Communication (SciComm) to non-experts has become an important transferable skill that every scientist should master. The popular science feature is therefore aimed at the general public\, and it will communicate the research presented by the invited speaker in an accessible way. It will be sent to Resource for publication\, posted on the NanoBioPhysX club website and further publicized via social media. Furthermore\, a workshop popular science communication is organised once per year. Successful completion of the course is based on the active participation in seminars and meet-the-speaker sessions\, the organization and chairing of meet-the-speaker sessions\, and the written feature. \nThis course aims to:\nImmerse participants in an interdisciplinary scientific environment and widen their scientific horizon.\nFoster scientific discussion and develop an interdisciplinary fundamental scientific community.\nGain societal outreach experience and improve popular science writing targeted at the general public. \nTarget group\nPhD candidates working on fundamental topics (experiment or theory) within the crossover field of nanotechnology\, biology\, physics and chemistry\, interested in broadening their academic scope and societal reach.

SUMMARY:Meet and Greet with PLOS Biology Editor Melissa Vazquez Hernandez
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what a typical workday looks like for a journal editor? \nMeet Melissa Vazquez Hernandez\, an editor at PLOS Biology. She specializes in microbiology—including virology\, mycology\, and parasitology—as well as immunology. In this talk\, she will share insights into her career transition from being a scientist to becoming an editor\, and what her role involves behind the scenes. \nDate: 12 June 2026 \nTime: 11:00 – 12:00 \nLocation: B0621 in Forum\, Wageningen Campus \nAbout Melissa Vazquez Hernandez \nRaised in a small city in Mexico\, Melissa received a BSc in Biotechnology from the Autonomous University of Queretaro where she studied the enzymatic capacities of the fungus Aspergillus. After graduating she moved to Mexico City to do a MSc in Biochemistry at the National Autonomous University of Mexico on Streptomyces and genome mining. She then did her PhD at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany under the supervision of Julia Bandow and Ken Keiler\, studying the physiology of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and novel antimicrobials. After a year as a postdoc\, she switched careers and joined the PLOS Biology team in December 2023. \n

SUMMARY:3rd year PhD interviews - 2026
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to indicate interest: 22 March 2026\nEach year EPS invites all EPS PhD candidates in their 3rd year (or 3rd year equivalent) for a PhD interview. \nThe purpose of the personal interview is twofold\, namely 1) for the graduate school to get feedback about the PhD experience from the PhD candidates\, and 2) to help the PhD candidate to reflect on the planning of and the priorities for the remaining PhD project time with somebody from outside the supervisory team.\nHomework beforehand will be to send in an updated training overview\, an outline of the (planned) thesis content and a (rough) timeline for the remaining work. \nAfter a call to indicate interest for an interview\, the personal interviews will be arranged in the summer period (dates depending on availability of the interviewers). The interested PhD candidates will be matched with an EPS research theme coordinator\, a member of the EPS Educational Committee\, or the EPS director. The interviews will last about 30 minutes and will\, in principle\, be hosted at the location of the interviewer (unless it is necessary to do it online). \nDetailed information about the whole procedure will be sent to the interested PhD candidates that respond to the call to declare their interest in an interview.\nInterested? Then please register your preferred interview dates in the form below. \nQuotes from PhD candidates that had a 3rd year PhD interview in 2025: \n“It was great to summarize the journey over the past 2.5 years\, and to reflect on the outcomes of my PhD so far. This opportunity during the 3rd year PhD interview is quite unique in that sense.” \n“Preparing for the third-year interview really helped me see how far I’ve come and where I want to go next. It was challenging but worth it.” \n“It is really quite informative to have a detailed discussion about your PhD with someone that has an outside perspective.” \n“It felt less like an interview and more like a wake-up call\, a reminder to prioritize what truly matters in order to finish the thesis on time.”
