SUMMARY:EPS Theme 3 Symposium: Metabolism and Adaptation - Nov 2026
DESCRIPTION:EPS Theme 3: Metabolism and Adaptation \nPlants rely on metabolism to carry out essential processes like photosynthesis\, respiration\, and the production of specialized compounds\, while continuously adjusting these processes to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Understanding plant metabolism and adaptation helps scientists improve crop resilience and develop sustainable agricultural solutions for challenges such as climate change and limited resources. Join the EPS Theme 3 day to learn more about the ongoing research projects with the EPS community. \nKeynote Speakers: \nInge de Clercq – VIB Gent \nHer core research areas include:\n\n\n\nOrganelle signaling: Investigating how plant cell compartments communicate with each other.\nStress response: Studying intracellular communication (such as mitochondrial retrograde signaling) to help plants adapt to environmental stresses.\nPlant immunity: Uncovering the molecular mechanisms that plants use to defend against pathogens.\n\n\n\n \n\nMariana Silva-Artur – Wageningen University & Research \nHer group combines experimental physiology\, bioinformatics\, and molecular biology techniques to investigate the mechanisms of seed resilience and survival under extreme conditions such as desiccation and high temperature. \n  \nDate: 3rd November 2026 \nTime: 09:00-17:30 \nLocation: C2035\, Wageningen University and Research \nFee: free for EPS members\, non-EPS members €75\, Industry €150* \n*You may cancel free of charge up to 1 month before  \nRegistration: open \nDeadline: 15 October 2026 \nOrganizers: Charlotte Gommers (WUR)\, Ivo Rieu (RU) and Juliane Teapal (EPS) \n  \nPresent your research! \nAre you an EPS PhD candidate or postdoc and would you like to present your research at this symposium? Contact the organising committee and send them a summary (3-5 sentences) of your research. In case there are not sufficient spots\, we will do a selection.

SUMMARY:EPS Theme 1 Symposium “Developmental Biology of Plants” - Nov 2026
DESCRIPTION:EPS Theme 1 Symposium “Developmental Biology of Plants” \n\nJoin the EPS Theme 1 symposium and learn more about the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive plant development from the initial zygote to full maturity. Growth progresses from an embryonic stage within the seed to post-embryonic development\, in which primary and secondary meristems continuously generate new cells that specialize as roots\, stems\, leaves\, and flowers. Ultimately\, this complex process of tissue and organ formation is regulated by a combination of inherited genetic information\, internal chemical signals like growth regulators\, and external environmental factors such as light\, temperature\, and nutrient availability.\n\n\nDate: 19 November 2026 \nTime: 09:00-17:30 \nLocation: Campus Wageningen University and Research\, W \nFee: free for EPS members\, non-EPS members €75\, Industry €150* \n*You may cancel free of charge up to 1 month before. There is a no-show fee.  \nRegistration: open \nDeadline for registration: 12 November 2026 \nOrganizers: Viola Willemsen (WUR)\, Kaisa Kajala (UU) and Juliane Teapal (EPS) \nPresent your research! \nAre you an EPS PhD candidate or postdoc and would you like to present your research at this symposium? Contact the organising committee and send them a summary (3-5 sentences) of your research. In case there are not sufficient spots\, we will do a selection.

SUMMARY:EPS workshop "Single-cell genomics in plants"- Feb 2027
DESCRIPTION:Gene expression is regulated in response to developmental and environmental cues and enables organisms to respond appropriately to internal and external signals. Because gene-regulatory programs are often different across cell types\, cell-specific transcriptional responses are typically not observed when profiling gene expression in whole organs or tissues. However\, emerging single-cell genomic technologies\, including transcriptomics\, are being used to characterize gene expression dynamics at unprecedented resolution. In addition to profiling cell-type specific responses in gene expression\, single-cell transcriptomics is being used to discover new cell types\, track cellular differentiation and predict gene-regulatory networks. Although single-cell transcriptomics techniques are typically more challenging in plants (e.g. due to presence of cell walls)\, recent technological advances are revolutionizing how we characterize gene regulation. \nIn this three-day workshop\, a combination of external and local speakers will present various topics related to single-cell transcriptomics in plants. Presentations will cover the latest technologies and computational approaches employed during single-cell transcriptomics experiments\, as well as how these single-cell approaches are being used to address both fundamental and applied research questions in plants. Hands-on wet lab training will be given during the first two days.  During the computer practicals\, participants will also learn how to analyze and visualize single-cell transcriptomic datasets. Altogether\, we aim for this course to help plant researchers design\, execute and analyze single-cell transcriptomics experiments\, and explore up-and-coming single-cell genomic applications. \n  \nDate: 09. – 11. February 2027 \nLocation: Wageningen Campus\, The Netherlands \nParticipants (max 25): PhD candidates and postdocs \nRegistration: opens soon \nOrganizers: Michael Nodine (WUR)\, Victoria Mironova (RU)\, Carolin Grones (WUR)\, Michael Schon (WUR) and Juliane Teapal (EPS) \nContact: Juliane Teapal

SUMMARY:NEW: EPS course Molecular Plant Pathology - Aug 2027
DESCRIPTION:Save the date !!!\nDate: 23.08. – 25.08.2027 \nLocation: Science Park\, Utrecht University \nRegistration: opens November 2026 \nNEW EPS course – Molecular Plant Pathology \nThe arms race between plants and pathogens or other invaders is never ending\, making it an ever evolving part of biology research. It is also an exciting research area because these interactions are multifaceted\, can be studied from different angles and at different levels\, and the obtained fundamental knowledge can be translated to crops\, enabling more sustainable agriculture. \nThe Netherlands has a long tradition of phytopathology research. Already 110 years ago\, in 1917\, the first female professor in the Netherlands\, Johanna Westerdijk\, gave her inaugural lecture. Since then\, research groups in the Netherlands have shaped the field and continue to advance it. We also enjoy being a part of this vibrant community and want to share our passion for both science and interactions between the scientists. \nWe believe plant pathology research is not only about interactions between plants and other organisms. It is about interactions between researchers and related fields such as biotechnology\, bioinformatics\, and translational research. Therefore\, we are delighted to announce a new EPS PhD course – Molecular Plant Pathology. \nThe course aims to serve as a platform for early-career researchers in molecular plant pathology in the Netherlands to situate their research within the broader context of plant immunity\, biotechnology\, earlier and current phytopathology research conducted in the Netherlands and to build their professional network. Lectures and assignments (challenges) provide an opportunity to acquire and apply new knowledge. \nThe first edition of the course will be held in Utrecht on August 23-25\, 2027. It is intended for ~20 PhDs or postdocs from EPS. The program is under development. Registration will open in November. For now\, save the date! \nWe look forward to having an interactive course! \nOrganizers: \nUvA – Sebastian Pfeilmeier\, Frank Takken \nLU – Pingtao Ding \nUU – Dmitry Lapin\, Saskia van Wees \nWUR – Matthieu Joosten\, Aska Goverse \nMain contact: Dmitry Lapin (UU\, d.lapin@uu.nl)
