SUMMARY:Scientific layout and design
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\nThis online course teaches you how to design attractive and functional layouts for different types of academic publications using Adobe InDesign. You will explore the tools of Adobe InDesign needed to create attractive and functional layouts\, such as books\, posters\, resumes\, and figures. You will be introduced to the program’s workspace and work with tailor-made exercises. By the end of the training\, you will know how to combine photos\, illustrations\, tables\, and text easily. You will receive a printed manual with the theory to refer to at any new design challenge.

SUMMARY:Collaboratieve workshops: Science for policy
DESCRIPTION:On 16 September\, 30 September and 14 October\, NWO is organising three collaborative workshops for the NWA Call ‘Science for policy’. Knowledge from research is essential for effective policy\, but is not always optimally used or complemented by new insights. This NWA programme focuses on strengthening and improving the interaction between knowledge and policy. \n\n\n\n\n\nAim of the Call\nThe purpose of this NWA programme is to investigate how knowledge from research can be optimally used by the government. This helps to better understand complex societal issues\, tackle them more effectively and efficiently and learn from this deployment. For this purpose\, current and possible new forms of interaction between the worlds of knowledge and policy are examined. It also examines how these forms of cooperation can be strengthened and what this should yield: better utilisable knowledge and better knowledge utilisation.  \n  \nCollaborative workshop 1 \nDate: 16 September 2025\, 12.00-17.00\nLocation: Jaarbeurs Utrecht \nCollaborative workshop 2\nDate: 30 September 2025\, 12.00-17.00 hours\nLocation: Jaarbeurs Utrecht \nCollaborative workshop 3 \nDate: 14 October 2025\, 12.00-17.00\nLocation: Jaarbeurs Utrecht \n\nRegistration: open

SUMMARY:Plant Chemical Communication: Integrating Perspectives from Molecules to Ecosystem Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Bilateral Japan-Netherlands Joint Research Seminars: \nPlant Chemical Communication: Integrating Perspectives from Molecules to Ecosystem Dynamics \nsupported by NWO and JSPS \nJoin us for a three-day conference exploring the molecular and ecological aspects of plant chemical communication. Leading scientists from Japan and the Netherlands will present their latest findings on how plants interact with the diverse organisms that surround and depend on them. The seminar will offer space for engaging discussions\, the exchange of fresh perspectives\, and opportunities to connect with fellow researchers. \n Would you like to present your work? \nWe’re looking for early-career researchers who want to share their work as part of the young researchers’ seminar. This will take place on tuesday afternoon the 23rd or September. To sign up for a flash talk (~ 5 minutes) or a short talk (~10-15 minutes)\, please fill in this sign-up form before the 1st of September. \n Keynote speakers: \n\nJunji Takabayashi\, Kyoto University\, Center for Ecological Research\nRobert Schuurink\, University of Amsterdam\, Department of Plant Physiology\n\nDate: 22.09.2025 – 24.09.2025\nLocation: New University Library\, Vendelstraat 2 – 8\, 1012 XX Amsterdam \nFee: 100 euros (including lunches and drinks) \nThe number of participants will be limited to 70. \nRegister

SUMMARY:NanoBioPhysX course
DESCRIPTION:Course outline\nAs part of the course\, participants will organize one meet-the-speaker session\, be the chair of the meeting\, and write a small popular science feature about the seminar. Scientific Communication (SciComm) to non-experts has become an important transferable skill that every scientist should master. The popular science feature is therefore aimed at the general public\, and it will communicate the research presented by the invited speaker in an accessible way. It will be sent to Resource for publication\, posted on the NanoBioPhysX club website and further publicized via social media. Furthermore\, a workshop popular science communication is organised once per year. Successful completion of the course is based on the active participation in seminars and meet-the-speaker sessions\, the organization and chairing of meet-the-speaker sessions\, and the written feature. \nThis course aims to:\nImmerse participants in an interdisciplinary scientific environment and widen their scientific horizon.\nFoster scientific discussion and develop an interdisciplinary fundamental scientific community.\nGain societal outreach experience and improve popular science writing targeted at the general public. \nTarget group\nPhD candidates working on fundamental topics (experiment or theory) within the crossover field of nanotechnology\, biology\, physics and chemistry\, interested in broadening their academic scope and societal reach.

SUMMARY:Career Development for Postdocs: Science and the Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\nPostdocs usually start their scientific career hoping that they will be able to obtain a permanent position after completing some temporary contracts. Unfortunately\, permanent positions are limited\, and the competition is fierce. Therefore\, at a certain point Postdocs will have to ask themselves if they want to continue pursuing a scientific career\, or to consider alternative possibilities outside academia. Experience shows that not only this decision is difficult to make by yourself\, but the idea of letting go of a career in which you have invested so much time and effort can be frightening. Especially if you do not know what a suitable alternative could be. \nThe Wageningen Graduate Schools (WGS) offers a program to Postdocs who may find themselves at such a crossroads\, allowing them to reflect on their career perspectives as scientists through an analysis of both their professional and personal strengths and weaknesses. The program addresses professional opportunities and challenges\, as well as the competencies needed to successfully present oneself on the job market (either within or outside of the academic field). In the event that a program participant is open to alternative career opportunities\, s/he will also receive support re-assessing her/his career plan.
